Even while we're lead carefully into this story that crosses generations, with the horror and brutality creeping in slowly at the edges and given great revelation panels/pages by Sean Phillips, Brubaker makes sure that there is plenty to watch and observe as the mystery builds to its climax. Brubaker's tales might take time, but that doesn't mean they're decompressed, leaving the reader wondering where the rest of the story they paid $2.99 for is located. I wasn't disappointed by what I found, which is a comic that has a lot of world-building and setup, but just enough action to keep the plot moving. It wasn't hard to get me interested in this series, which features two of my favorite genres being produced by two of my favorite creators who've already shown their ability to write noir-style stories mixed with other topics. Except this time ancient and unspeakable evils are tied to our lovely lady as her story plays out in a backdrop of crime, corruption, and murder in this first trade of the horror noir comic Fatale. So not only was there no room to add a nearly 300 page novel to this new volume, but CRUEL SUMMER had not yet been released as its own book.A mysterious woman winds her way into the lives of several men, with the typical results of jealousy and betrayal. It's also in the pipeline.Īnd as for the first question - why CRUEL SUMMER isn't part of vol 3? It's fairly simple - these books generally run about 400 - 450 pages, and it's been eight or more years since CRIMINAL DELUXE EDITION vol 2 came out, so we already had all of vol 3's pages filled with the stories and novellas that are collected in it.Īlso, the Deluxe Editions collect books that have already been released on their own, and often gone out of print. Same with the first FATALE Deluxe volume. So, second question first - the pandemic shutdown sadly made it too much of a stretch to print three giant hardbacks at the same time, so the new editions of vol 1 and 2, with new covers by Sean, will be out in the Spring of next year, assuming there is a spring of next year. Also wondering why the Deluxe vol 1 and 2 aren't yet back in print because they are very hard to find now and going for a lot of money on ebay and other places.

A bunch of you wrote in asking about the CRIMINAL DELUXE EDITION vol 3 and why CRUEL SUMMER isn't being included in this new edition.
